Fundraising pitch deck: why design makes investors sign (or run)

An investor spends on average less than 3 minutes on a pitch deck. In reality, they decide in seconds whether to keep reading. What triggers that decision isn’t (yet) your content: it’s what they see. Here’s why the design of a fundraising pitch deck makes investors sign, or run.

How an investor actually reads a deck

They scan. They don’t read left to right: they jump to titles, numbers, charts. If the visual hierarchy is blurry, they can’t find your traction, and an investor who can’t find traction checks out. Design isn’t decoration: it’s what guides their eye to what matters, in the right order.

The 12-15 slide structure, and what design must do

An investor deck usually fits in 12 to 15 slides: problem, solution, market, product, traction, business model, team, and the ask. The design’s job, slide by slide:

  • Make the urgency of the problem tangible in one image.
  • Show traction early (ideally before slide 5), with legible data viz.
  • Make the ask unambiguous.

The rule: one idea per slide, a message carried by the visual, not drowned in it.

The design mistakes that kill a deck

  • Overload: three ideas and a wall of text per slide. The investor gives up.
  • The template look: a generic deck, recognisable at a glance, signals « not funded yet ».
  • Weak data viz: key numbers drowned, badly framed, no hierarchy.
  • No visual narrative: 15 slides that don’t tell a story, just a list.

Each of these mistakes costs attention. And in a raise, attention is the currency.

DIY (Canva/Gamma) vs freelance vs agency: the real math

DIY (Canva, Gamma, AI): free or nearly, perfect to iterate content. The risk: the « template look » that makes you one of a thousand.

Freelance / art director: a custom deck, visuals built from scratch, a worked narrative. From ~€2,000, delivered in 5 to 10 days.

Large agency: from €8,000 to €15,000, often oversized for a seed.

The right call depends on stage: pre-seed, iterate in Canva. Once the raise is serious (seed, Series A), custom design pays for itself on a single signature.

Your content is ready but your deck « doesn’t look serious »? That’s exactly what we fix: a custom pitch deck built so your traction jumps out. Let’s talk for 30 minutes.

Your brand deserves better than a template.
